Rooibos tea (pronounced roy-boss) is becoming increasingly more popular. This south African red bush tea, is an herbal blend that is actually a tisane, not a tea. Tisane is the French word for “herbal infusion”. Herbal infusions are often floral or fruity. Tisane’s are naturally grown without caffeine!

Rooibos is unlike any other herbal tea, in that it is red! This natural red appears after the leaves have oxidized. With the exception of “green” Rooibos. “Green” Rooibos produces a dull green colour, and tastes like an Orange Pekoe tea when steeped correctly (yet remains naturally caffeine free!).

Rooibos is harvested by hand, and then bound into bundles. To encourage oxidization the bundles are then cut and bruised. The oxidation process helps the leaves to develop their rich flavour and red colour. The colour of the Rooibos is completely dependent on the oxidization process. The longer the plant is oxidized, the richer red it is. The less time the plant is oxidized, the more light and green the plant is. Therefore, creating Green Rooibos.

Rooibos sales have skyrocketed in the past few years. Part of this is to do with taste and the absence of caffeine, but mainly because of the health benefits that are found in this drink.

Health benefits include:

  • Naturally caffeine free
  • Higher antioxidants than green tea
  • Hydrating
  • Contains trace amounts of minerals
  • No steeping time limits
  • Combats different health issues
  • Low in astringency
  • Helps digestion

This tea is great as a traditional hot drink, but makes a healthy alternative to an iced tea on a warm day! You can get a variety of different flavours of Rooibos. Including but not limited to; Pure, Chai, Green, Berry, Spearmint, Ginger Lemon, etc.
