We’re well into 2019 now, and with it I wanted to bring a flashback of some of 2018’s most popular drink trends. Let us know if you see one of your favourites on the list!

Pumpkin Spice Latte

Let’s face it, the pumpkin spice latte has been around for years, but it is still easily one of the most popular seasonal drinks to have on your menu! Pumpkin spice lovers will usually begin asking for this most favoured drink late summer or early fall. So, if you haven’t had it on your menu before, you should consider adding it to your seasonal drink line up for this year!

This versatile drink can be made with or without fancy toppings. You should have the option available for customers to have whipped cream with ground nutmeg and cinnamon on top, or just as it is! This is a coffee-based beverage that uses espresso, milk of your choice and pumpkin spice flavoured syrup.

Chai Lattes or Dirty Chai Lattes

Chai lattes are probably an item that you have on your menu year-round, but most likely you’ll see an increase of sales in the winter months. The reason being that people associate the warm and friendly drink with the cozy environment that you offer. Chai lattes can be made a variety of different ways, with a variety of different mixes. We currently offer five different chai mixes for you to choose from, you just add the milk you’d like and you’re ready to begin steaming! This year we expect to see The Chai Company’s Grizzly Chai take off in popularity. This is the only chai mix that we carry that is half sweet with double the spice.

Want to turn this popular drink into a “Dirty Chai Latte”? Add 1-2 ounces of espresso to bring out an entirely different flavour pallet!

White Chocolate Frappe

The white chocolate frappe is very popular in the summer months. This chilled drink requires the use of a blender but can easily be made into an entirely different specialty drink with the use of a few different flavour syrups! Try mixing in a raspberry or peach syrup, or even some of your liquid chai mix for a new flavour pallet.  Top your drink with fresh fruit or garnish the glass for an extra fancy kick!

Bulletproof Coffee

If you have anyone in the keto community visiting your shop, bulletproof coffee is a must have! Currently we are seeing Keto rise in popularity and having keto friendly options will expand your customer base. To make bulletproof coffee you will need to have great coffee, octane oil and grass-fed ghee. Use a milk frother to blend it together and serve! An additional keto drink that we have seen on the rise are cream based lattes.

Holiday Blend

As always, our Holiday Blend was popular during the Christmas season. Part of this is because it’s only available for a limited time. Each year we launch Holiday Blend from November 12th – December 21st. Customers love the idea of receiving a coffee that is special and only available for a limited time. Even though we don’t add anything to the coffee, this is still one of our best sellers. You can look forward to seeing more seasonal blends in 2019 from Nova Coffee!

Milk Alternatives

With the new Canada Food Guide coming out that now contains less dairy, we can all expect to see a rise in milk alternative sales. Almond milk is still the most popular milk alternative, with soy coming in as second. Though as of the end of 2018 we are seeing a rise in sales from oat milk. Oat milk is a new product that is taking the coffee community by storm! If you don’t have this at your location, make sure to add one to your next order to try!

Cold Brew Coffee

Have you tried cold brew yet? This delightful beverage is favoured in the hot weather and can be made with any kind of coffee! We recommend trying this with a medium dark roast like our Bella Royale. To make cold brew you need to have a either a Toddy Cold Brew System or a mesh bag specifically for the ground coffee. You will simply “brew” this coffee in cold water for 12 hours and remove your bag. This is an unsweetened coffee that is perfect for the summer time! Make sure you have a simple syrup on hand for those who may want it a bit sweeter.

Craft Beer Infused with Coffee

Craft breweries are becoming more popular as time goes on. We have recently had a local brewery reach out about making “coffee beer”. Spindrift Brewing Company will be launching four unique beers made with four different blends of Nova Coffee! Spindrift also has previously made a beer with our French Roast, and it was delicious! We are looking forward to trying these four new recipes. Have you tried a coffee beer before? Check with your local pubs and breweries to see if they have any available. If you have a liquor licence, this might be something to offer on your seasonal menu!

Detoxifying Drinks

Out with the old, in with the new. Once popular green tea has seemingly been put on the back burner to make way for naturally detoxifying drinks. We have seen a rise in requests for drinks with turmeric, ginger and cinnamon. These spices can be added into your menu by creating a latte or a steamer. They are naturally unsweetened so have sweetener available as an option. Honey is a great addition to your milk bar!

Reusable or Biodegradable Packaging

We have been seeing a rise in environmental concerns regarding packaging for years. In 2018 society took some larger steps to obtain reusable drink vessels and metal straws. Most establishments have now switched from plastic stir sticks to either wooden, or better yet metal spoons. We have seen our Omni degradable paper coffee bags becoming more popular over this past year as well. Of course, being in the serving business that unfortunately doesn’t mean that we can cut out paper cups or lids all together, it does seem that there will always be a demand for those who do not carry reusable vessels. But even looking into grocery stores, most places now either charge for plastic bags or just don’t carry them at all! Have you made steps to be more environmentally friendly, or had customers commenting on your changes?
